Clik here to view.Big Bear Lake, CA, February 20, 2014 – It’s never too early to start saving for college. Local kindergartners have a chance to win a $25 scholarship by drawing a picture of a pirate, and older students can compete for much bigger scholarships with their writing. It’s all part of the Pirate Essay Contest presented by the Bear Valley Renaissance Society (BVRS).
The nonprofit education corporation uses proceeds from the events they produce to advance education in the valley. The Pirate Essay Contest will distribute $925 across five age groups. Themes range from “Your favorite thing about pirates”–a hundred-word essay assigned to first- through third-graders–all the way up to a 500-word assignment for high schoolers on “The pirate Hippolyte de Bouchard.” The winning essay is worth $500.
Entries are due June 15, and the top three contenders in each category will get tickets to the Big Bear Pirate Faire August 16. The finalists will read their essays at the Faire for final judging, and winners will be announced on the spot.
